Historical sides of Turkmenistan
Day 1
Meet the group at the Turkmen-Uzbek border. Drive to the North of Turkmenistan, to the architectural monuments of KoneUrgench, Capital of Khorezm in X-XII centuries. During the tour we visit the Mausoleum of Najm al-Din al-Kubra, TyurabekKhanum, Il-Arslan, TekeshIbnHadzhibey, the highest minaret in Central Asia KutlygTimur. Lunch at the local restaurant. After the lunch we will drive to the Gas Crater (by locals nicknamed as The Door to Hell) which is located to the North of Ashgabat, in high comfortable SUV JEEP, stop in a small nomadic village and in the evening we will observe the spectacular and fascinating view of the gas crater. Picnic style dinner (Barbecue). Overnight at the tent.
Day 2
After the breakfast we will drive to Ashgabat, accommodation at the hotel. Lunch. In the afternoon we visit “Nisa”, a UNESCO site which was once the Capital of the Parthian Empire, continue with the horse-farm for exploring the pride of the Turkmen people – Akhal-Teke horses. Also Traditional Tea party, short Akhal-Teke horse show program and can see the racks of horses. ReturnbacktoAshgabat, Dinner.
Day 3
This day we will explore the capital of Turkmenistan. We will see independence period parks and monuments, such as the Monument and Park of Independence (looking like a white-marble “Eiffel Tower” standing in a beautiful park), a fountain-monument devoted to the 10th anniversary of independence (sculptural depiction of ten Akhal-Tekke horses placed on the top of a beautiful fountain) and impressive Ertoghrul Ghazi mosque. In the afternoon we will also visit the National Museum (closed on TUE) of History and Ethnography (more than 327.000 objects on a display) and see the exclusive ancient artifacts from different historical & archeological sites of Turkmenistan. In the afternoon we will drive to Mary city, accommodation and dinner at the hotel.
Day 4
After the breakfast at the hotel, the group will visit we head 25 km to the east of Mary, towards Bayram-Ali, the contemporary re-incarnation of and humble suburb of the glorious Ancient Merv (UNESCO World Heritage Site). One of the major archaeological sites of Central Asia, Merv played an important part in the development of the Silk Road for more than 2 000 years. Within the limits of the archaeological park, which is 1200 ha, we will have a chance to observe all constituent parts of the “wandering city”. The splendid XII c. mausoleums of Sultan Sanjar and Muhammedibn-Zeyd, demonstrating exquisite Seljuk period brickwork and architectural décor. Continue with drive to the border Turkmenistan-Uzbekistan, Farap/Alat.
